Over the last decade, “mobile-first” reframed product strategy around constrained screens, touch interactions, and on-the-go contexts. Today, we’re witnessing another tectonic shift: artificial intelligence is moving from a feature to the axis of product experiences.

Interfaces surface assistance, suggestions and orchestration rather than just controls.
Success metrics emphasize utility under uncertainty (how often the system helps complete a user’s goal, even when inputs are incomplete). This differs from “AI-enhanced” products where AI is simply a behind-the-scenes optimizer; in AI-first, AI is the primary interaction partner.

Traditional usability testing is necessary but insufficient. Recommended approach:
Qualitative
Shadowing & diary studies to see where AI suggestions would matter.

AI-first product delivery requires reorganizing people and work:

The best AI-first products will be those that make intelligence legible, make mistakes harmless, and make outcomes clearly better for users.
